Access Hennepin County Court Records

Hennepin County Court records are handled through Minnesota's District Court system, with online case search, hearing search, public terminals, and written copy requests serving different record needs. A Hennepin County Court case search can locate public civil, criminal, family, probate, traffic, judgment, and hearing information when remote access rules allow it. Because the county uses a unified trial court, record access depends less on separate local courts and more on the case type, division, public-access rule, and copy channel. Search for Hennepin County Court cases online first, then use court administration when certified copies or restricted records require staff help.

Hennepin County Court Search Fields

The main MCRO Case Search fields are flexible, but they also have limits. Sounds Like can broaden a name search, while a trailing wildcard can be used after two characters when Sounds Like is not selected. Hennepin should be selected in the county list for local searches. Pending criminal, traffic, and petty misdemeanor cases without conviction may not appear in defendant-name searches, so a case number or citation number may be needed.

Hennepin County Court System

Minnesota uses a unified state trial-court structure. Hennepin County is the Fourth Judicial District, and District Court handles nearly all local trial matters through divisions rather than through separate county, justice, or municipal courts. Civil, criminal, family, juvenile, probate, mental health, housing, traffic, conciliation, and judgment matters all route through District Court channels, though the public may interact with different locations and offices.

The Hennepin court divisions page explains how local work is divided by case type.

The division structure is the reason a traffic citation, a probate file, and a felony case can all be District Court records while following different access paths.

The Hennepin County Government Center is the main court building and contains civil, criminal, family, housing, probate, mental health, and traffic functions. The Records Center is on the B-Level, and public terminals are available there during weekday court hours. The Public Safety Facility handles criminal and traffic work and is also tied to jail, warrants, bail, and turn-in services. Brookdale and Ridgedale handle suburban criminal and traffic matters. Juvenile Court is at the Juvenile Justice Center.

Types of Hennepin County Court Records

Hennepin County Court records include civil complaints, answers, motions, affidavits, exhibits, orders, judgments, satisfactions of judgment, name-change filings, conciliation matters, and housing cases. Criminal files include complaints, charges, public warrant activity, attorney appearances, pleas, dispositions, sentencing entries, probation conditions when public, fines, restitution, bond fields, and hearing history. Traffic and petty misdemeanor records may be found through MCRO citation search, Web Payment, the Violations Bureau, or the Records Center.

Family case records include divorce, custody, support, paternity, domestic abuse, harassment, and visitation matters, but online public-document access is more limited. Probate files include estates, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, Letters, inventories, accountings, and orders. Juvenile and mental-health records have stricter access rules, and civil commitment documents are not available online in MCRO. Marriage records are county vital-record records rather than court case files, while divorce records are District Court family records.

  • Civil and housing records track claims, filings, orders, judgments, and court events.
  • Criminal and traffic records track charges, citations, hearings, pleas, dispositions, sentences, and fines.
  • Family and divorce records track dissolution, custody, support, paternity, domestic abuse, and harassment matters.
  • Probate and mental health records track estates, trusts, guardianship, conservatorship, and civil commitment case activity.
  • Judgments can be searched separately by debtor name through MCRO Judgment Search.

What Hennepin Court Records Show

A Hennepin County Court record commonly shows a case number, case title, party names, attorney names, case type, case status, court location, filing date, hearing dates, judicial officer, Register of Actions events, charge details, judgment details, financial obligations, warrant or bail activity when public, and public documents available online. A case type is not the same as a final outcome. A felony case type can end with a lower sentence level, and a charge can be amended, dismissed, or resolved in several ways.

TermPlain Meaning
Register of ActionsThe public event log showing filings, hearings, orders, notices, judgments, and dispositions.
DispositionThe outcome of a charge, motion, claim, or case.
JudgmentA final or enforceable court decision, often a money judgment in civil cases.
ComplaintThe starting document in many civil or criminal cases.
ExpungementA court order sealing qualifying records from ordinary public access.

Hennepin County Court Access Rules

The Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch control access to court case records across Minnesota.

Hennepin County court records Minnesota public access rules

These court rules explain why Hennepin County Court records are not handled like ordinary county administrative data.

Key access rules:

Rule 4 identifies court case records that are not public or have special restrictions.

Rule 8 governs inspection, copying, bulk distribution, and remote online access.

Minnesota Statutes Chapter 13 applies to many county and sheriff records, not ordinary court case-file access.

Minnesota Statutes section 609A.03 provides the petition process for criminal-record expungement.

MCRO excludes domestic abuse order-for-protection and harassment restraining order case types from remote access. It also excludes CHIPS and certain juvenile delinquency case types, public documents in civil commitment case types, party street addresses, and comment fields. Public courthouse-terminal access may be broader than internet access, which is why Rule 8 should be read as a remote-access rule as well as a copying rule.

Hennepin County Court Calendars

The Hennepin court calendars page points users to District Court calendar information and hearing-contact guidance.

Court calendars should be treated as schedule information that may need confirmation when a hearing date, courtroom, or remote status matters.

For Hennepin County Court dates, MCRO Hearing Search can search by person name, business name, case number, judicial officer, attorney name, or attorney bar number. It can also filter by hearing date, case category, and Hennepin court location. Calendar information is most useful when paired with a current notice or case number. The Court Contact Center at 612-348-6000 is the practical call-before-go channel for hearing questions.

The Hennepin court contact page lists the Court Contact Center, jury office, hours, Spanish service note, and directory links.

The contact page is the best official fallback when a hearing date, division phone path, interpreter need, or records question cannot be resolved from MCRO alone.

Hennepin Records Center Copies

The Hennepin Records Center is the local court administration route for official copies, older files, and records that are public but not downloadable through MCRO. Written court copy requests should include requester name, phone number, mailing address, email address, case number if known, case name or parties, document requested, copy type, delivery method, and payment when a fee applies. Certified copies are mailed back. Plain copies can be emailed if the requester gives an email address and the record can be sent that way.

ItemFee / Rule
Certified court copy$14 per copy in the Hennepin probate/copy context.
Exemplified copy$14 per copy.
Certified copy of Letters$14 per copy.
Plain probate copiesNo fee for plain copies of filed or unfiled probate documents and correspondence per FAQ.
Certified marriage certificate copy$9 from Hennepin County if Hennepin issued the license.

Hennepin Sheriff Jail and Warrants

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is led by Sheriff Dawanna S. Witt. The jail is also called the Adult Detention Center and has two downtown Minneapolis locations: the Public Safety Facility at 401 South 4th Avenue and Minneapolis City Hall at 350 South 5th Street. The jail roster is updated hourly and shows people in county custody and people released in the last seven days, along with charges, bail, and scheduled court dates. The roster is a custody record, while the court case remains a District Court record.

Hennepin warrant access is not a public full active-warrant search form. The sheriff's warrant instructions tell users to check by phone or in person. District Court can be called at 612-348-6000 with full name and date of birth to get a case or warrant number. Once that number is known, the sheriff's warrants line at 612-348-2000 can explain bail and resolution instructions. The Hennepin County inmate records page covers roster details, jail locations, and custody-specific fields.

Hennepin Divorce and Probate Records

Marriage records are Hennepin County licensing records, not District Court case records. Hennepin issues certified marriage records for licenses it issued, and the Minnesota Official Marriage System provides statewide public marriage searching for participating counties. Divorce records are different. A divorce case is a family court file in District Court, and certified decrees or older family records may require the Records Center when MCRO does not provide the needed document.

Hennepin probate is the Probate Division of Hennepin County District Court, grouped with Mental Health Court. It handles estates, wills, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and related orders. Probate search starts in MCRO with Hennepin selected and Probate or Mental Health as the category, then shifts to Document Search or the Records Center when public documents are not available online. The Probate Division of Hennepin County District Court page covers probate thresholds, Letters, certified copies, and guardianship details.

Hennepin Treatment Courts

Hennepin treatment courts operate through the Criminal Division at the Government Center. These are not separate courts for public-record purposes, but they affect hearing schedules, case events, supervision terms, and disposition context in criminal case records. Criminal Mental Health Court serves defendants with serious mental illness or co-occurring disorders and is a voluntary 12 to 18 month program. Drug Court is a voluntary post-conviction program for eligible non-violent chemically dependent felony property and drug offenders. DWI Court serves repeat DWI offenders in a program lasting at least 18 months, and Veterans Court serves veterans with criminal cases and behavioral-health or addiction needs.

Because these programs operate inside District Court, the case record may still show standard criminal events such as charges, pleas, hearings, probation terms, review hearings, and final disposition. Program participation should not be treated as an expungement or dismissal unless the Register of Actions or final order says so.

Hennepin County Court History

The Government Center was completed in 1974 and was designed by John Carl Warnecke and Associates of San Francisco with Peterson, Clark and Associates of Minneapolis. The building uses carnelian red granite from Ortonville, Minnesota, the same stone used in Minneapolis City Hall, where the courthouse previously sat. Its two-tower structure is still practical for visitors: the Courts tower, or C-Tower, contains 39 courtrooms, related court offices, and the Hennepin County Law Library, while the Administration tower houses county and district-court offices.

The modern court-records story is also digital. MCRO now provides remote access to many public district court records, hearing searches, judgment searches, and post-July 1, 2015 public documents when the rules allow internet display. At the same time, courthouse terminals and the Records Center remain necessary for older files, restricted case types, certified copies, and public documents not available remotely.

Local Hennepin Court Search Tips

The Minnesota State Law Library court-records guide is a useful state-level backup when MCRO terms, courthouse terminals, and certified-copy rules are hard to sort.

Hennepin County court records State Law Library guide

The law library guide reinforces the main local rule: online access, courthouse-terminal access, and certified records are related but not the same.

Hennepin County's court and jail geography is compact. The Government Center, City Hall jail location, Public Safety Facility, county attorney, federal courthouse, and Government Plaza transit station are all in downtown Minneapolis. That helps in-person record work, but it also means visitors should plan for security screening, downtown parking, skyway navigation, and the difference between the Government Center and Public Safety Facility. The court site provides language resources, including Spanish, Hmong, Somali, and other language links, and ADA Accommodation links are available from the Judicial Branch pages.

Note: MCRO terms warn that name searches can be unreliable because different people may share names, birthdates, aliases, or identifiers.
